Line Work

Ramble On Records

July 12, 2026

Open through:

Line Work is a mixed-media exhibition by Charlotte-based artist Aba Hutchison exploring figures through color, texture, and line. The show will be held in a record shop in historic Old Town Rock Hill, about 35 minutes from Charlotte. The exhibition is accompanied by a soundscape curated by Charlotte DJs Ajané and Amina, who selected music in response to the visual work, shaping an audio layer that runs alongside the exhibition.

Aba began drawing portraits at 18 while taking AP Art at Cox Mill High School. What started as an attempt to create realistic portraits gradually shifted into a focus on line itself. After an art teacher once noted her “heavy hand,” referring to visible pencil marks beneath finished drawings, she chose not to erase them. Instead, those lines became central to her practice.

Across acrylic paint, acrylic markers, oil pastel, and mixed media, Aba builds images through direct, expressive linework. Many elements reflect subjects that currently catch her eye: buzz cuts, sunglasses, thick eyebrows, and nonchalant expressions appear throughout the series, along with a few bold animal studies. Each piece translates observation into essential marks, exploring how much personality can be carried through line alone.

Some works feature numbers derived from the timestamp of completion, adding contrast and a subtle secondary structure within the compositions.

Line Work invites viewers into a space where drawing, sound, and observation overlap, encouraging attention to the visual language already present in everyday life.
