The paintings presented in After the Dinner Party are a love letter to the act of lingering. Inspired by the frequent dinner parties Treppendahl hosts, the works invite the viewer to stay a while as they explore the beauty in everyday spaces made intimate by immersing oneself into settings of domestic tranquility and curated memories.
After recently welcoming a child, Treppendhal found that she had to find creative ways to socialize and stay present with her loved ones. Hosting people quickly became the solution, inviting friends to gather and reconnect in beautifully curated spaces in her home. The result of these gatherings was that of charmingly cluttered interiors, spilled wine, and dripping candles. In After the Dinner Party, Treppendahl is able to capture these still lifes with careful consideration of light and color to create an overwhelming sense of warmth and comfort.
Treppendhal’s paintings each depict a real-life collection of objects, often on the mantle of her New Orleans home. These miniature collections and assemblages became altar-like still-lives, filled with light and joy in the midst of a chaotic household. Rather than seeking to represent the likeness of items in specificity, each object, captured beam of light, and vibrant color evoke intense feelings of a location or memory.
